A group of Boy Scouts gave back to their community in a big way this weekend.

"Do a Good Turn Daily" is the Boy Scout motto and Scout leader Ed Ronshausen made sure his group of kids lived it at Fort De Soto State Park this weekend.

“That is the reward of being a Scout leader is just seeing these kids develop and get excited about putting back into the community,” he said.

The scouts from Pinellas and Pasco counties are spending the weekend at Fort De Soto sanding and painting all the picnic tables.

“For when people come out, they can they don’t get splinters and stuff,” Boy Scout Connor Cruise said.

Connor and other Scouts are living up to the Scout motto. At the same time they’re saving taxpayers more than $50,000 by volunteering to do this work.

“To keep everything up and going and not look bad,” Connor said.

More than 600 Scouts sanded and painted about 400 tables this weekend.

It’s exactly what Scout leaders envisioned when they organized the weekend.

“We have so many bad stories about kids, we love the positive image that these kids are doing for us,” said Ronshausen.

Scout leaders are hoping this weekend helps mold these kids into even better adults.

More than 2,600 community service hours were donated to Fort De Soto this weekend.

The kids are all from the West Central Florida Council of Boy Scouts.
