Police arrested a Tampa man early Sunday in yet another wrong-way driving incident on I-275 in the Tampa area.

Around 3:13 a.m., a Tampa police officer was driving his marked cruiser south on I-275, just north of the Howard Avenue exit, when he saw a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes, authorities said.

The officer swerved to avoid a collision and then stopped the wrong-way vehicle, police said.

Josean Carrasquillo, 25, was found to have red eyes and slurred speech, and two tests placed his blood alcohol level at .165 and 1.59, police said. Carrasquillo was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

No crashes or injuries were reported, but the arrest was the latest in a string of wrong-way incidents on Tampa-area highways this year, and several have been fatal.

The Florida Highway Patrol has been conducting increased traffic patrols to target wrong-way and impaired drivers.
