A longtime lawmaker is facing a political newcomer in the race for the District 10 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Winter Garden, has spent 34 years in politics, serving in both the Florida House and Senate before being elected to Congress in 2008.

His opponent, Democrat Michael McKenna, is a retired Navy chief petty officer who currently works for Walt Disney World as a security officer.

Webster touts his experience in politics as giving him the first-hand knowledge as to how to "fix broken government, restore forgotten values and create effective practices and policy."

Webster says his priorities in Congress include addressing the national debt and focusing on balancing the federal budget. According to his website, he "supported a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution and have only voted for budgets that will balance."

Webster also supports tax reform, wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act and says he has consistently earned an "A+" rating from the NRA.

McKenna defeated two challengers - Shayan Modarres and Bill Ferree - in the Democratic primary. He said that if he wins he plans to bring fresh energy to Washington DC, particularly as it relates to military matters.

According to his website, McKenna's priorities include immigration reform and resolving some issues in the Affordable Care Act, which he calls excellent but imperfect ground work aimed at dealing with the nation's health care problems.

His budget priorities include closing tax loopholes and deductions, making the tax code simpler and getting rid of waste, fraud and abuse.  He also said he plans to look at reducing tax breaks for businesses that send jobs overseas.

The 10th Congressional District includes Polk County from Winter Haven north to the county line, and also includes Lake and Orange counties. About 19 percent of the district's residents live in Polk County.
