The city of St. Petersburg is facing a federal lawsuit that could total in the tens of millions of dollars.
The suit was filed in federal court Monday in connection with a police shooting that left 18-year-old Quade Everett with severe brain damage.
Everett was shot in the head last December when he fled in what police say was a stolen truck.
Officer Brian Fernandez claimed Everett was headed right for him, so he opened fire.
Fernandez was later fired for his actions. He and officer Brain Prest are also named in the lawsuit that claims they violated Everett’s civil rights.
"We were thankful that they took the steps of firing the officer that was involved in this particular incident. But that's only really the beginning," said Everett's attorney, Jim Wardell. "(Everett's) not completely stable, but he's doing very, very well. He walks with a cane. His speech is still impared because he has some motor control skills of his tongue that are difficult."
St. Pete Police officials would not comment on the pending case. They have 20 days to respond to the lawsuit.
