Crews are taking down a controversial fence that cost the county nearly $81,000 to put up on the southern edge of Pine Ridge.

According to the Citrus County Chronicle, the county put up the off-white vinyl fence along County Road 486 several years ago as part of an agreement with the homeowners association there. But the agreement has changed.

Years ago, the fence was included in a transaction between the county and the property owners association when the county acquired property from the association for right-of-way purposes. At the time, the association agreed to maintain the fence.

According to the Chronicle, the deal was modified recently at the request of the property owners group, handing back responsibility for the fence to the county. Association officials said they could no longer maintain the fence - in part, because of vandalism.

The county will put the fence materials in storage.
