The city of Bradenton is knocking down abandoned homes in the Village of the Arts in hopes of helping revitalize the area.

Artists not only work but also live in the community, consisting of cottages built in the 1920’s and 30’s.

While many residents have fixed up the older homes, some sit empty and rundown.

The abandoned homes have sat empty for many years, but they won't be for much longer.

Recently, the city adopted an ordinance that allows the demolition of abandoned structures that represent an immediate threat to public safety.

So far one home has been demolished and more will be coming down soon.

Residents said they’re hoping it will lead to more redevelopment opportunities for the community.

“It’s about time they get some of the abandoned homes down and straighten up,” said Eric Houston. “They should put some more Village of the Arts houses up around here.”

In addition to the demolition of abandoned homes, the city is also painting the street pole lights pink and adding more lighting to the area.
