The 10-year-old Polk County girl diagnosed with the first confirmed case of enterovirus 68 in Florida has recovered.

Harleigh Dunn spent six days in the hospital and is now back at school in Lakeland. According to the Florida Department of Health, Dunn is a resident of Polk County but was treated in Hillsborough County.

State officials said Dunn has recovered completely and is not infectious.

Dunn's mother Jennifer Dunn said the family took extra precautions.

"They released her to go back to school right after she got back from the hospital," Jennifer Dunn said. "But we kept her home for another week after that. So she was out for another week an a half."

Health officials said they don't know of any other infections at Dunn's school, St. Joseph's Academy in Lakeland. Officials have sent information to Polk public schools to be on the lookout for flu-like symptoms and how to prevent them from spreading.

The virus progresses rapidly with children going from healthy to severely ill in just a day. More than 600 EV-D68 infections have been confirmed in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Health officials say in reality the influenza virus is responsible for more hospitalizations then the enterovirus is.
