The Tyrone area of St. Petersburg is getting a new, state-of-the-art cinema complex.

Without a theater since the AMC Tyrone Square 6 closed in 2007, the busy retail area will be home to the Cobb Luxury 10 Theatre in early 2016, commercial real estate company Simon and Cobb announced Wednesday.

The complex will be in the northwest parking area of Tyrone Square mall fronting Tyrone Boulevard and will have a full-service restaurant and bar and reclining seats with footrests. Construction is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2015 and take about a year.

"We’re very pleased to announce the newest addition to Cobb Theatres and are thrilled to be a part of the St. Petersburg area," said Jeremy Welman, chief operating officer of Cobb Theatres. "This location will incorporate the newest technology with our modern next generation design. We’re excited to bring the Cobb standards of guest experience and service to the moviegoers in this community."

According to Cob, the new theater will seat 1,200 patrons and offer the following amenities:

  • 100 percent digital projection & 11.1 sound
  • Wall-to-wall screens with 3D capabilities
  • Leather electronically controlled recliner seating with footrests
  • Specially equipped D-BOX auditorium featuring chairs synced to the action of the movie for a one-of-a-kind immersive movie experience.
  • Rear Window Captioning and Descriptive Audio for hearing and sight impaired guests.
  • Featuring Cobbster’s Kitchen, a full-service restaurant and bar. Patrons can order a "chef-inspired meal" or adult beverage in a family-friendly environment or take them into the show.
  • Reserved seating with online ticketing
  • Remote ticketing kiosks

Tyrone Square, opened in 1972, is a 1,100,000-square-foot mall located at the corner of Tyrone Boulevard and 66th Street N.

The last movies shown at the old AMC Tyrone Square 6 cinemas were Apocalypto, The Good Shepherd and We are Marshall.
