Thousands of dragon boat enthusiasts gathered to raise money to fight hunger over the weekend.

The Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival drew participants from around the country and raised funds and awareness for the Community Food Bank of Citrus County.

Officials haven't tabulated how much money was raised yet.

“We have different charities, and they (the food bank) have been the charity the last two times,” Andy Smith of Citrus County Chamber of Commerce told the Citrus County Chronicle. “We did wounded warriors before that.”

The food bank serves 43 agencies, all within Citrus County, executive director Tom Chancey told the Chronicle. A $10 contribution can provide 80 meals.

The dragon boat races featured two types of boats: 11-person and 21-person. There were all women's teams and mixed teams. A drummer at one end of the boat sets the pace for paddlers.
