A Citrus County sheriff's deputy shot and fatally wounded a woman he said removed his Taser and pointed it at him Sunday night at an Inverness mobile home park.

According to the sheriff's office, deputy Jacob Chenoweth was dispatched to Inverness Park, 550 W Independence Highway, Lot 6, to investigate a report that a woman was trying to light her neighbor's truck on fire.

When the deputy arrived at the park entrance, a woman later identified as 46-year-old Dawn Renee Cameron charged and then attacked him, engaging him in a physical altercation, according to the incident report.

Chenoweth said Cameron grabbed his Taser and pointed it at him and that he then shot her.

Cameron was treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene and taken to a hospital. She was pronounced dead just before midnight.

Neighbors described Cameron as nice and helpful, but a little strange. They said that earlier Sunday, she was in her home reading her Bible out loud, which was not uncommon for her.

"She always waved and said hi," Joyce Overley said. "It's hard to believe something like this would happen here."

"It's sad that this had to have happened, and that police officer is going to have to live with that," neighbor Bill French said.

Investigators are trying to determine why Cameron was trying to set her neighbor's truck on fire and whether she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The truck was not damaged.

Chenoweth has been with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office since March 2010, and there are no disciplinary incidents in his file, the agency said. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a law enforcement shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate.
