Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis is warning about a rash of thefts from construction sites around the county.

Construction is picking back up in Hernando County, and officials say that while construction means new jobs and businesses for the county, it also means more opportunities for theft.

Over the last several weeks, several construction sites - particularly in Spring Hill - have been burglarized, officials said. The thieves are taking construction equipment, appliances and anything of value.

Deputies are asking residents to report any suspicious activity near or at construction sites. That includes the following:

  • Construction crews that appear to be working late at night or unusually early in the morning
  • Someone leaving a construction sit with appliances or equipment
  • Construction vehicles that are uncommon to that particular construction site.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call the Hernando County Sheriff's Office at 352-754-6830.
