Police said a Lakeland woman was killed Tuesday when she was hit by a truck as she crossed a road.
Lois P. Smith, 65, was crossing in the 700 block of N. Florida Avenue short after 6 p.m. when she was hit by a 2000 Dodge pick-up truck heading south in the outside lane, police said.
Police said the driver of the pick-up truck said he did not see Smith crossing the road when he hit her. He immediately hit his brakes, coming to a stop about 60 feet from the point of impact, police said.
Smith was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.
Police said impairment, speed and distraction do not appear to play a factor in the crash. They said Smith was crossing outside of a marked crosswalk at the time of the incident.
The driver of the truck was not injured and has not been charged with any violations.
The investigation continues.
