Bartow police are investigating a Miami man's death after he was found unconscious in a crashed semi.

Police said the crash happened at the intersection of State Road 60 and Van Fleet Drive shortly after midnight Thursday.

When they arrived, they found the driver of the semi, identified as Gabriel Novales-Ramirez, 61, unconscious. The arriving officers performed CPR until emergency crews arrived. The crews then took Novales-Ramirez to Bartow Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

The early investigation indicates the semi was heading west on State Road 60 when Novales-Ramirez failed to negotiate the turn onto Van Fleet Drive. The semi traveled across the road and into the ditch, where it came to final rest.

Drivers in the area noticed Novales-Ramirez slumped over the steering wheel and notified authorities.

Investigators are now trying to determine if Novales-Ramirez died from injuries he sustained in the crash, or if he died from a medical condition.

The crash remains under investigation pending the outcome of the autopsy.
