Two women were killed early Thursday morning when a teenage driver ran a red light in Bradenton, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. on 26th Street W at the intersection with 53rd Avenue W.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 16-year-old driver was heading north on 26th Street W in a 2003 Ford Explorer when he failed to stop for the red traffic signal and hit the left side of a 2012 Volkswagen Passat, which was driving west through the intersection.

The driver, Gabriella Longpre, 22, and her passenger, Jessica Costanzo, 23, both of Venice, died as a result of the crash.

The 16-year-old driver was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.  

Charges are pending, officials say.
