A 57-year-old Pinellas Park man died Tuesday morning after shooting himself during an argument with his wife.

According to Pinellas Park police, Dennis Eugene Emery was involved in a verbal argument with his wife just after 6 a.m. inside their home in the 5200 block of 87th Avenue.

Officers said Emery got a handgun from one of the rooms in the home and threatened to shoot the family dog.

According to the police report, Emery pulled the hammer back on the revolver he was holding and at some point, he started to release the hammer back into a safe position.

Officers said Emery pointed the gun at his face while he was lowering the hammer and the firearm discharged, striking him in the face. Emergency personnel responded to the home but pronounced Emery dead at the scene.

According to the Pinellas Park Police Department, its officers have had 34 contacts with Emery since 2012. Most recently, Emery was arrested three times in five days in October on charges of domestic violence, aggravated assault and resisting arrest and leaving the scene of a crash.
