Traffic was impacted Wednesday morning along southbound Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa at Interstate 275 after an excavator struck the overpass.

According to police, the excavator was being transported on a truck when it struck the overpass. Officers said the driver of the flatbed truck hauling the excavator misjudged the height of the equipment.

Lanes had to be shut down as transportation crews inspected the overpass and the roadway. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the bridge girders underneath I-275 were damaged as a result of the crash.

FDOT officials say inspectors have looked at the bridge and it’s safe for traffic. The minor damage caused to cement beams will likely be repaired sometime next week, in the overnight hours.

A date for the repairs hasn’t been set yet.

All of the lanes were reopened by 1 p.m.

The area where the crash happened is part of major construction project widening the interstate from the Westshore area to the Hillsborough River.

There were no injuries reported.
