A Tampa man is dead after he exchanged gunfire with deputies while barricaded in a Westchase condo, officials said.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a condo in the 9600 block of Magnolia Blossom Drive shortly after 1 p.m. after receiving a request to conduct a welfare check.

Deputies said that when they arrived, they found Matthew P. Cormier, 45, barricaded in the house. Cormier threatened the deputies, saying he would have to kill him and he would kill some of them in the process, deputies said.

Officials said deputies proceeded to negotiate with Cormier for over five hours, and that during the course of the negotiations, Cormier fired several shots at the deputies from a second-floor window. One of those bullets hit one of the patrol vehicles.

Deputies said that Cormier was aiming out of the window again at about 6 p.m. and appeared to be fixed on a target when members of the SWAT team fired a shot, striking him.

Cormier was declared dead at the scene.

Condominiums in the immediate area were evacuated during the course of the barricade situation.
