The deep blue sea is coming ashore in St. Petersburg.

Monday night kicked off the Deep Blue Sea Film Festival where filmmakers show their underwater adventures while bringing awareness to the conservation of the planet's most vital resources.

The six day event started with a viewing of Oscar Award winning movie maker James Cameron's documentary Deep Sea Challenge which chronicles the promise and pitfalls of filming in the world's deepest waters.

The film's director, John Bruno said it was seven years in the making.

"For me, it's about his (Cameron's) character and the character of the people who actually built the submarine, planned the launch, launched the sub and actually had a successful dive to the deepest place in the world's ocean," he said.

Amy Blake saw the film. She said it was marvelous.

"I'm afraid of enclosed spaces and deep water," said Blake. "So this is as close as I'm gonna get."

The festival runs through Sunday.
