A special day for those who need it most.

On Thursday, Christmas came early for a group of children in Manatee County.

The 29th annual Flight to the North Pole event took place at the Sarasota/Bradenton Fire Department. It was a day of cheer for dozens of terminally ill children and their families.

“We have about 140-children that are ill that came today along with their siblings,” said Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube.

Snow was on the ground for children to play with, as well as gams, singing, face painting, clowns, horse riding and more.

“I like to do fun activities,” said Omari Evans, 8.

The program was started in 1985 by a group of Eastern Airline Flight attendants and then later the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, local businesses and volunteers took it over.

“We just think it’s a great way to be able to provide some gifts and good times to some kids that are ill,” said Steube. “Possibly next year we might not see them.”

One of the biggest highlights was Santa, who arrived by helicopter, instead of his sleigh. After greeting the children, he then handed out their gifts.

“It just brings joy to his eyes,” said Julie Griffith, whose 13-year-old son, James, has attended the event for the past five years.  “He just runs in and sees Santa and runs to him and hugs him.”

The event is put on through donations and is free to the children and their families. A delightful experience the children said they look forward to year after year and will never forget.

“It’s wonderful,” said Jaden Hamilton, 9.
