A Polk County business with a unique concept is opening up, catering to young adult video gamers.

But not everyone in the Winter Haven neighborhood where Christopher Barton wants to set up shop is on board.

Barton's business idea is to combine video games and alcohol. He calls it a barcade. His 400 square-foot shop, located at 1622 Sixth Street SE, would host gamers enjoying beer or wine.

The city has given the business the go-ahead, but some locals don't like the idea.

"It’s one thing to play with a headset at home," Barton said. "But it’s a whole another thing to have four, eight or 10 people in a room interacting playing these games."

Patrons would have to be 21 to enter and the gaming would be free. But they would be encouraged to buy beer or wine while gaming. Barton said Barcode would be open up to six days a week in the afternoon hours.

He has assured neighboring businesses and residents that parking, crowds and gambling won't be a problem.

"We’re concerned more because of the alcohol," said Denise Overlock, who works at a neighboring business. "That was my only reason because people are going to come and hang out and be in this location more than just a few minutes. They’re going to be there for longer periods of time."

Still, other welcome the new game center.

"I think it’s a fantastic idea," said Richard Koon, a Winter Haven business owner. "I hope he succeeds. As for the concerns of the location if he succeeds he’s gonna find a bigger and better place."

There is still no opening date set, Barton said.
