The Pasco County Sheriff's Office says vandals damaged 20 gravestones in the Anclote Cemetery.

Officials believe gangs are to blame for the destruction at the end of Cemetery Road.

"I don’t know why they would do this, why my family, why did they pick all of mine," said Clara Lewis, whose entire family is buried at the cemetery. "My youngest brother, he was a Marine. He was killed in Vietnam. That was his flag. They took it down, they ripped it."

Investigators said the vandals came in and destroyed the property sometime on Saturday. Headstones were knocked over and spray-painted with profanities, and vases were shattered in a place that's supposed to be for peace.

"He’s supposed to rest in peace, in a place like this, and I feel like they have taken it away from him," said Andy White, whose brother-in-law is buried at the cemetery.

For White, it has awakened feelings of even more sorrow.

"It’s almost like losing him again," said White.

The community's cemetery has been around since the mid 1800s. Many people like Lewis have their own plots.

"I didn’t believe that people could be so horrible, so heartless," she said. "These people have done nothing to nobody. These are good people."

"When somebody does this for no apparent reason it hurts," said White.

The families hope whoever disturbed their loved ones' resting places is found.

The sheriff’s office came out on Saturday to check the head stones for finger prints.

Vinson Funeral Home, who runs the cemetery, will begin fixing up the gravesites once the sheriff's office is done collecting evidence.

There are no suspects at this time.
