A well-known Citrus County golf club is picking up the pieces after a late-night fire.

According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, a deputy responded to reports of smoke at the Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club just before midnight.

A full alarm was activated and firefighters responded to find a 6,000-square foot steel structure fully involved in flames. Firefighters from Kensington, Hernando, Inverness, Connell Heights, Homosassa and Pine Ridge were able to bring the flames under control in about an hour.

Now the club's staff will have to clean up the aftermath of the fire, which left dozens of golf carts charred and destroyed. Several hours after the fire was put out, smoke continued to linger in the area.

General Anthony Lambert said the club is going to take a pretty big loss as a result of the fire.

"Pretty good loss is right," said General Manager Anthony Lambert. "Yeah, we had about 88 carts in there. Probably a little over a million dollars worth of content total, in property and content."

Lambert says they are insured. He hopes to get the mess cleaned up and rebuild as soon as possible.

Investigators say the cause of the fire is under investigation. They also say there were no injuries. Nobody was in the building when it went up in flames.
