The driver of a car that veered into the water near Gulf and Bayway Boulevards in Clearwater died on Wednesday.

According to reports, Sam Walter Weeden, 86, was driving a Buick around 4:30 p.m. when it veered off the road into a parking lot and took out some poles adjacent to a marina. The vehicle eventually clipped a sailboat before coming to rest about 40 feet from shore in 10 feet of water, officials said.

Police and firefighters who responded to the call dived in to pull Weeden from the submerged car and he was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
