The voices of a small Citrus County community have been heard.

Plans to build a hotel and condo complex in the community of Ozello, near the coast, have been stopped.

Residents like David Dyke spoke up to county leaders, saying the four-story, 77-room building would be a bad fit for the community.

The project was planned for the site of the former Pirate’s Cove restaurant, near Pirate Point and Mullet Loop closed.

"My horror was that overnight it would double the population of this island," said Dyke.

The county commission listened and agreed, unanimously voting down the developer's request.

"Everybody says, 'Well, big money talks'...it was very pleasing to see it turn the way it did," Dyke said.
