A small fire broke out early Wednesday at Lakewood Elementary School in south St. Petersburg.

There were no injuries and the fire was contained to a storage unit attached to the school's cafeteria.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue officials said they do not have a cause of the fire at the school, located at 4151 6th Street S.

Flames were limited to the cinderblock storage room. Officials said a water pipe that burst in the flames actually helped douse the fire and cool off the room. Still, there was damage to maintenance equipment, a golf cart and the ceiling.

Officials said there is no smoke damage, although smoke had to be vented out of the storage unit, cafeteria and kitchen.

Principal Cynthia Kidd said classes are in session today and food will be brought in for the students.

The fire remains under investigation.
