One of the hottest new gifts this holiday season is raising concerns with aviation enthusiasts about safety.

Video drones are a popular way to capture dramatic view form a bird’s eye perspective.

The concern is, that when kids and adults power them up on Christmas, many won’t know what they’re doing.

That’s where aviation model experts say they can help.

Patrick Sherman is organizing a program called “Drone for the Holidays.” It’s a nationwide effort to educate drone operators on the correct and safest way to fly.

“We've partnered with the Academy of Model Aeronautics as well as the Drone User Network and frankly anybody who will work with us,” said Sherman. “And what we want to do is on January 3, have a day where they get together in their local communities and teach these new people who've got these new systems how to fly them safely and responsibly.”

Although no organizations have officially planned on offering training programs in the Bay area on January 3, Larry Roberts, who’s with the group South Pinellas Aeronautical Radio Kontrol Society (SPARKS), says he’s willing to help.

“I would say, bring it (the drones) on out … there’s room," said Roberts. "You’re not going to hurt anybody.”
