A Brandon man was killed and a Lithia man was critically injured in a wrong-way crash on State Road 60 in Plant City early Saturday, authorities said.

The crash happened near Cable Road just before 5 a.m. The eastbound lanes of S.R. 60 were closed for several hours.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2014 Ford F-250 truck was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of S.R. 60 and collided head-on with a 2005 F-250.

The wrong-way driver, 52-year-old John Borata of Brandon, died at the scene. The second driver, a 28-year-old Tyler Strickland of Lithia, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. Authorities said later that he was stable.

Wrong-way crashes have been in the news more than usual this year because of five crashes that claimed 11 lives on interstate highways in Hillsborough and Pasco counties. This crash did not happen on an expressway.
