A homeless man died Saturday, two days after he was punched in the face and fell down, hitting his head on the pavement, police said.

The incident happened Thursday at 7 p.m. in Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg.

According to St. Petersburg police, Eric Clyde Balmonte, 33, was engaged in an argument with his girlfriend when another man, identified as Timothy Joseph Turner, 32, got between Balmote and his girlfriend. Then police said Turner punched Balmonte in the face with a closed fist.

Balmonte was knocked out from the punch and fell backwards, hitting his head on the road. Balmonte was taken to a local hospital with a cranial fracture and excessive brain bleed. He was taken off life support on Saturday morning.
