A 20-year-old man was arrested Christmas night in connection with the death of a Palmetto High football player.

According to Palmetto police, Roberto Betancourt has been arrested in the death of Kyle O'Halloran, who was killed Thursday afternoon in an incident involving a vehicle outside his home in the 1800 block of 14th Avenue West.

Police said O'Halloran was killed after confronting the driver of a vehicle that pulled into his driveway.

A memorial was started outside th football field where O'Halloran used to play.

"It was devastating," said Dave Marino, Kyle’s former football coach. "My heart just bleeds for his parents, his sister, all of his immediate family."

According to police, witnesses told investigators that they saw O'Halloran hanging out of the window of a Lincoln Town Car as it drove north on 14th Avenue W at around 5 p.m. O'Halloran fell from the vehicle with his head striking the ground. He later died.

O'Halloran, 18, was a popular football player at Palmetto High. He had recently signed a scholarship to play football in college. Students say they are planning to wear all orange, O'Halloran's favorite color, on the first day back at school to show their respect.

"It was shocking when I heard, 'oh it was over a fight,' because he’s not really mean," said teammate Justin Elwell. "On the football field he would be aggressive -- but that’s all."

Detectives said O’Halloran was involved in an altercation with the passengers in the Town Car and grabbed hold of the vehicle as it tried to leave his driveway.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle, Betancourt, deliberately drove away from the scene with O'Halloran hanging on. He also failed to stop and help and failed to report the incident.

Betancourt was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, reckless driving, and driving with no valid driver’s license.

Betancourt has been booked into the Manatee County Jail. An investigation into the death is ongoing. So far, O'Halloran's death has not been ruled a homicide, police said.

The Palmetto High School Athletic Department tweeted: "We pause to remember Kyle O'Halloran. We are collecting details and will issue a statement soon. Please keep Kyle and his family in prayer."
