This winter has been especially rough for those living up north.

And many of them are probably wishing to escape to Florida.

Pinellas County tourism officials love capitalizing on the attractions Florida has to offer: beaches, sunshine, theme parks and warm temperatures.

But, sometimes, a rainy day can wash away those options for tourists. Now, Pinellas County tourism officials are looking at ways to even promote things to do when the sunshine temporarily disappears behind rain clouds.

In a presentation today to the Pinellas County Commission, officials with Visit St. Pete/Clearwater are unveiling research it conducted on what tourists want during "rain outs."

Officials also will highlight indoor activities (restaurants, shopping, theaters, museums) and activities they believe can turn a drab day into a money maker for the county.

Tourism officials recently conducted a survey, asking if an additional penny "resort tax" to help promote rainy day destination activities would be a good idea. The results were split right at about 50 percent, officials said.
