An eastern Hillsborough County high school is celebrating 100 years of memories today.

Brandon High School has been around for ten decades and the school, present and past students and faculty are all celebrating.

Organizers are putting the finishing touches on this weekend's celebratory event a century in the making.

"It (the school) turns 100 and we thought it was a great time to celebrate," said Cher Stanbro with the BHS 100th Anniversary Committee. "Kind of renew a passion for the area."

A lot has changed at Brandon High School since 1914.

The original school was transformed into a middle school in the early 1970s, although remnants of the high school still remain.

Alumni Terri Wehinger said she has fond memories of bouncing through the halls of her alma mater.

"I was here when it turned 75 and we had a bit of a celebration then, but nothing like (this)," said Wehinger, a 1961 graduate. "I'm hoping to see a lot of people back, teachers back who've retired. We've invited one and all."

Visitors this weekend will see new murals, new faces and, organizers hope, a renewed interest in supporting the Eagles.

"Brandon used to have a huge booster club, used to have a huge alumni," Stanbro said. "It's really dwindled over the years and so we're hoping this gets people excited about being a part of Brandon again."

The weekend celebration kicks off with a 7 p.m. orchestra concert in the school auditorium.

The weekend events include a 5K run, Brandon Youth Wrestling, an alumni challenge and silent auction and a keynote address from Dr. Earl Lennard, a Brandon High grad and the county's former school superintendent.

A food truck rally, vintage car show, time capsule presentation and after party also will be a part of the celebration.
