A 24-year-old Tampa man was killed early Sunday when he ran a red light on his motorcycle and crashed into a car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Joel Baxter Cooper was driving a 2002 Yamaha R6 south on Dale Mabry Highway at a high rate of speed around 3:13 a.m., troopers said. He rode through a red light at Fletcher Avenue/S Village Drive and collided with a Hyundai Sonata driven by 21-year-old Michele Lopez of Tampa.

The motorcycle rebounded to the outside shoulder of the southbound lanes, then hit a concrete wall and a tree, troopers said.

The Hyundai continued west and collided with an eastbound Chevy Equinox driven by Timothy Wright, 23, of Tampa.

Cooper died at the scene. Lopez was treated for minor injuries at St. Joseph's Hospital. Wright was not injured.
