Peggy Gamble first noticed the hole along the exterior wall of her Port Richey condominium on Saturday.

At the time she said it was small and she thought perhaps and animal had been digging there.

But when she checked again on Sunday, she said she realized she had something much more serious on her hands.

"I had my husband come out and look at it and he said I think we have a problem here," she said.

"I took one look at it and I said that is not a hole, that's a cavern," said Jim Gamble.

As of late Monday afternoon, the hole was as large as four feet wide and at least 11 feet deep. And while it's not yet clear if it's a sinkhole, the Gambles were evacuated by fire rescue.

"It's dark in there," said Peggy about the deep hole.

As it turns out, it's the perfect hiding spot for a possum. The animal crawled into the hole sometime overnight and the complex maintenance crew tried without luck to get it out with a net.

The Gambles said if the possum wants the hole he can have it for the time being. Because they don't plan on returning home until everything is safe and sound.

"It's only a house. Houses can be replaced," said Jim. "If you lose your life, it's gone."

The complex is waiting on a team of engineers to decide whether or not it's a sinkhole and how to go about fixing it.  The maintenance crew also said if the possum doesn't make it out of the hole on his own, they will call animal control to help.
