A hazardous materials team was among the emergency crews called to the University of South Florida's Tampa campus early Wednesday after what was described as an explosion in a chemistry lab.

According to Tampa Fire Rescue, multiple fire alarms were heard coming from the school's Research and Innovation Building just before 3 a.m. Once Tampa Fire Rescue arrived at the school's lab, they reportedly heard a large boom.

After entering the lab, crews found the door of a large refrigerator in a chemistry lab had blown off. The door hit the inner pane of a double-paned window in a chemical lab.

Because crews have not determined what chemicals were in the refrigerator, the hazmat team was called to the scene.

No injuries were reported. No hazardous chemicals were spilled and there was no fire.

Firefighters cleared the building and began venting the lab.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the blast.

USF officials said the building will remain closed until all investigations are complete and USF officials determine it is clear for re-entry.
