Troopers are searching for the driver they said hit and killed an Apollo Beach man who was lying in a northbound lane of U.S. 301 early Tuesday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Anthony J. Giffin, 24, was lying in the northbound lane of U.S. 301 just south of Stanford Road when he was hit by an unknown vehicle at 1:41 am. Troopers said the driver didn't stop and kept driving.

Giffin died at the scene of the crash.

Investigators said car parts found at the scene are consistent with those of a white Chrysler PT Cruiser, model years 2006-2009. The vehicle would have sustained damage to the lower front bumper cover and would be missing part of the inner wheel liner on one of the wheels.
