Florida Polytechnic University will soon have a new president.

The board of Florida Polytechnic University voted unanimously to offer the position to Randy Avent, the associate vice chancellor of research at North Carolina State University.

According to our partners at the Ledger, Avent, 55, competed for the post with Robert McGrath, who is the vice president of teh George Institute of Technology and director of the George Tech Research Institute.

Avent has been with North Carolina State since 2012. He has a bachelor's degree in zoology, a master's in biomedical mathematics and engineering, a master's degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in biomedical mathematics and engineering.

Once his contract is finalized, the Florida Board of Governors must then give final approval.
