Crossing a street the wrong way in Clearwater could be a costly mistake.

Clearwater police want pedestrians to use crosswalks or face fines.

Officers are ramping up efforts to ticket jaywalks on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, issuing a $62.50 ticket to those breaking the law.

Police are using funding from a High Visibility Enforcement Grant awarded by the Florida Department of Transportation to ramp up their efforts.

According to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, as part of the education phase, Clearwater officers are stopping jaywalkers to give them a warning and talking to the violators about the importance of pedestrian safety.

Officers also are giving out bike lights to people riding without them. Bike lights are required by law for riders at night.

Florida ranks third in the nation for pedestrian fatalities. In 2013, Pinellas County had 20 pedestrian and nine bicycle fatalities.
