Dr. Harris Silverman, an ophthalmologist in Bradenton and Sarasota, has listened as hundreds of patients over the years have complained about how difficult it is to put in eye drops.

"In order to get an eye drop in your eye you have to hyper extend your neck. Throw your head back," Silverman said. "Well, my patients have trouble throwing their head back."

Silverman said often times patients waste their eye medication because too much comes out of the bottle at once.

“Some of the drops can sell for as much as $150 to $180 a bottle so when you miss a drop from these tiny little bottles. You can see money running down your cheek.”

So this doctor decided to do something about it. He invented an eye drop applicator with the help of Doug Mansfield, a local plastics manufacturer.

“It’s a thermal plastic that has a high energy surface meaning that the hydrogen in the water is more attracted to the plastic surface the it is to the oxygen molecules in the water,” said Mansfield.

With the hi-tech plastic handle, the applicator can be held vertically, upside down and the drop stays put until it touches the eye. All users have to do to use it is put a small eye drop on the Simplytouch and apply it to the eye.

"I think it’s very effective," said Silverman. "It’s going to make the medicine bottle last much longer so that you don’t run out you may actually save a lot of money over the course of the years when you extended the life of a bottle maybe 50 percent."
