Tampa police responded to what they thought was a reckless driver, but it later turned out the man was suffering a medical emergency.

According to Tampa police, an officer went to check out reports of a reckless driver swerving all over Central Avenue at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday. The officer saw the driver crash into two cars and tried to take the driver into custody.

Police said Arthur Green Jr., 63, started resisting, so the officer called for backup. Shortly after Green was handcuffed, they realized he might be having a diabetic emergency.

Green stopped breathing, and the officers took off the handcuffs and started performing CPR.  They were able to revive Green, but he later died at the hospital.

Initial medical reports indicate Green had suffered from severe hypoglycemia.

Officials said Tampa Fire Rescue had gone to his home twice this year for diabetic issues.

Police said no one else was injured in any of the crashes.
