A Palmetto man was arrested in connection with the investigation into allegations of animal neglect at a Bradenton animal sanctuary.

Dr. Edward E. Dunham, 76, was arrested Saturday morning on one count of aggravated animal cruelty.

Dunham is the third person arrested in the investigation into Napier's Log Cabin Horse and Animal Sanctuary. On Thursday, Alan Napier, 51, and his wife, 45-year-old Sheree Napier, were arrested on multiple charges of aggravated animal cruelty.

Deputies said Dunham did not follow the proper procedure when performing a spay and hernia repair surgery, which was indicated in one of the dog's records. Dunham gave the dog a drug that would immobilize the animal and induce amnesia but not provide any pain relief, officials said.

According to reports, the drug is lawfully required to be combined with a sedative or some other form of anesthethic, which meant the dog suffered unnecessary pain and suffering during the surgeries.

The investigation began in February when deputies executed a search warrant at the sanctuary on State Road 64 E.  More than 300 dogs, cats, horses, pigs and another animals were confiscated from the property.

The investigation continues.
