Fresh tomatoes or delicious ripe fruit are options Anise woods and her daughter would normally have to drive miles to get. But now they are closer than ever before.

“We were just leaving church and my mom saw fruits and vegetables, which is rare for this area,” said Woods. “A live fruit stand? It just looked wonderful.”

The fruit, veggies and vendors are a part of a new initiative by a Pinellas County group called Deuces Five. They’re focusing on bringing more foot traffic into local businesses near 22nd Street (also known as the deuces) in midtown.

“You had all kind of businesses but once the interstate came over it killed all of that and now we’re trying to bring it back bigger and better,” said Deuces Live President Tony Macon. “Not trying to we’re going to bring it back bigger and better.”

And if you ask Brad Krulce, the group is already off to a great start.

“Anytime you get new business in, it’s a good thing,” Krulce said. “The people doing it have to do the most to make it happen and the residents have to recognize it’s important for the area and support it.”

That’s the group’s goal every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m..

Woods says it’s definitely a recipe for success.

“I think it’s an absolutely wonderful idea,” said Woods. “There’s some beautiful new businesses here. I see an ice cream shop and I see a pizza shop over there. So I think it’s a great idea. It will bring a lot of happy faces.”

So whether it’s cook to order Thai food, tee shirts or tomatoes, the group is hoping the Sunday market will continue to be a hit in a community that was hard hit by the economy.
