The Polk County School Board voted unanimously on Tuesday to terminate Jennifer Fichter, 29, an English teacher at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy.

Investigators said Fichter admitted having sex with a 17-year-old boy dozens of times in the back of her truck.

"What this lady did was not good,” said School Board Chairman Dick Mullenax, after the meeting.  “I mean, it's a terrible thing.  We're sorry that it happened in Polk County.  I'd be sorry if it happened to anyone in any county anywhere."

Before Fichter taught at the school in Lakeland in Polk County, officials said she taught at Robinsonwood Middle School where she was investigated for allegations of inappropriate texting in Orlando in Orange County in 2008

Before the investigation was completed, Fichter resigned and Orange County Public Schools officials said they never reported the case to the Florida Department of Education.

That’s why, officials said, there were no red flags when Fichter applied for the teaching job in Polk County.

Still, many want to know who dropped the ball and allowed Fichter to teach in Polk County?

Schools officials in Polk refuse to point the finger at their counterparts in Orange County. They will only say Fichter didn’t tell the truth.

"She left the Orange County position, which she was only there for half a year, she left that off of the application," said Kathryn LeRoy, Polk County Superintendent.

'She flat-out lied on her application because she never mentioned anything, a position, in Orange County," said Mullenax.

School officials say Fichter was screened, fingerprinted, underwent a background check, and they checked her references.

But once again, Fichter had no record with the Florida Department of Education.

"If there was an investigation flag on here, would we have hired her?” asked Superintendent LeRoy. “Of course not."

Many now want to know if this could happen again.

The School Board Chairman said hopefully a case like this will never fall through the cracks again.

"I just wish that if things like this happen again in the state of Florida, anywhere in the state of Florida, that they will take the time to notify officials in Tallahassee," said Mullenax.

Fichter remains locked up in Polk County.

She also has to face a judge in Hillsborough County for three charges she faces there for allegedly having sex with that same student.

The Superintendent went on to say that anyone who wants to work in the district must now turn over three annual evaluations from previous employers.
