Testimony is over in the trial of Lake Alfred woman accused of shooting her husband to death and then burying his body in an herb garden and lying about his whereabouts for months.

Barbara Scott never took the stand during the trial in Bartow. Closing arguments are planned for Thursday morning and the jury is expected to get the case in the afternoon.

Prosecutors contend that Barbara Scott shot her husband, Benny, in the head with a stolen handgun in January 2012, then then told friends and relatives conflicting stories about why they weren't able to see him in person or talk to him on the phone for several months.

Barbara Scott's daughter confronted her in March 2012 about the conflicting stories. Sonya Braudway testified in court that is when her mother told her that Benny Scott had fallen in the shower and suffered a head injury.

Braudway testified Scott told her that she had panicked and wasn't thinking straight when she buried the body and planted an herb garden on top of the shallow grave next to her home.

But Benny Scott hadn't simply fallen in the bathroom. He had been shot once in the rear of his head. Polk's medical examiner testified that the evidence didn't support the idea that the gunshot wound was the result of a suicide.

Some of Benny Scott's friends and family from his home state of Oklahoma also testified that despite heart problems, Benny Scott appeared to be in good spirits during a visit to Oklahoma shortly before he disappeared.

On Wednesday, a former medical examiner testified for the defense. Dr. William Anderson told jurors that he did an autopsy on Scott's body. He said Scott's remains had decayed so much that it wasn't possible to determine if he was killed or committed suicide.
