The leader of Hillsborough County school's transportation department has resigned.

Hillsborough County Schools Spokesman Stephen Hegarty confirmed Wednesday morning that John Franklin, the chief of the county's school bus system, has stepped down.

Franklin's resignation is the latest, and most high-profile, in a string of resignations from the problem-plagued department. Transportation administration manager Willie Campbell, 58, recently resigned, along with several other employees.

The moves come after dozens of school bus drivers have complained about safety and personnel issues in March. Some of the complaints named employees who recently resigned.

The Hillsborough school bus system has 1,400 buses and transports 90,000 students daily.

Franklin has been on the job since 2007.

According to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, Hillsborough Superintendent MaryEllen Elia has promised a comprehensive action plan that will tie together all the investigations into the department.
