A Hernando County man was sentenced to prison on Thursday after he was found guilty of murdering his daughter-in-law.

Brett Hattenbrun, 63, was charged with second-degree murder after officials said he beat his daughter-in-law, Joey Hattenbrun, to death with a lead pipe more than two years ago in front of her home.

Joey Hattenbrun's mother, Carolyn Crouch, said she will never forgive and forget.

"I can never do that," said Crouch. "When you get to your future home, crawl under a rock with the rest of the vermin because no one will miss you."

Prosecutors said Hattenbrun admitted to the murder. They said Hattenbrun wanted to kill her because he was angry about marital problems with Joey and his son, Chad.

Just days after the murder, detectives came to his home armed with a search warrant.  That’s when investigators say Hattenbrun tossed a Molotov cocktail and began firing a nail gun at them.

His public defender said he did that because he wanted deputies to shoot and kill him.

The jury also found Hattenbrun guilty of six counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of throwing a destructive device and theft of property from his daughter-in-law.

The couple has a 5-year-old boy who lives with his father.
