A Port Richey girl is still recovering in the hospital from a severe dog bite.

Authorities say Shaina Foreman, 7, was attacked by a chocolate Labrador that belonged to a family friend. Shaina has since had reconstructive surgery, and her parents say she is recovering well.

The owner surrendered the dog to Animal Control.

Shaina's parents say it's been a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved.

"I just wish that I could've been there to hold her when it happened," Sam Woolfson said. "I wouldn't wish this on anyone in the world, so whatever has to happen to the dog, you know..."

A Tampa General surgeon said the dog bite damaged Shaina's nose, skin and eye area. The good news is that she is not expected to suffer vision loss.

The family has set up a Facebook page called Strength for Shaina where anyone can leave messages of encouragement.
