A smoke detector alerted a family of seven to the fire that broke out in their Tampa house overnight, allowing them to safely escape.

Tampa Fire Rescue responded to the 1500 block of Annie Street shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.

When they arrived, they found much of the single-story home engulfed in flames. Crews were able to quickly put the fire out.

Firefighters said smoke detector went off, warning the family about the fire. Everyone was able to get out of the house safely.

Investigators were able to determine the fire was caused by an electrical failure along the northern wall of the master bedroom.

The house sustained damage from fire, smoke and heat, as well as water damage from fire suppression efforts.

"Although damage to the home and contents is estimated at $51,000, no price can be put on the lives of the seven people who escaped unscathed," the Fire Marshal said in a news release. "This is a testament to the value and necessity of smoke alarms being installed in residential homes."

Fire rescue officials are urging everyone to check the batteries in their smoke detectors. Tampa residents who do not have a smoke detector can contact their nearest fire station to receive a smoke detector and batteries at no cost.
