The family of the autistic boy slapped by an aide on his school bus has hired prominent attorney Jose Baez to represent them.

Baez successfully represented Casey Anthony in 2011. Now, he is working with New Port Richey mother Lori Lamb, after her 10-year-old son Jeffery was slapped around on his school bus by aide James Lambert.

"Obviously you look at this man's actions and right away, you can tell he has no business working with children," Baez said. "And more importantly, children with special needs."

Disturbing surveillance video of the incident was made public earlier this week. Lambert, now out of jail on bail, was arrested and charged with child abuse and has since resigned from his job with the Pasco County School district.

Still, the Lamb family said that is not enough and, with Baez in their corner, their hoping to ensure it never happens again.

"I think that will be the ultimate goal here to create some type of change," said Baez.  "I know the Lamb family is very interested in that and if that is their goal, it's certainly going to be our mission."

While it's a possibility, Baez said legislation isn't something they will necessarily pursue.  He said changing school district policy could be just as effective.

For example, Baez would like to a see a person going over school bus surveillance video on a daily basis because in some cases, a student with disabilities may not be capable of reporting abuse themselves.

Case in point, Lori Lamb said she didn't find out from her son that he had been hit on the school bus. She said she heard it from another parent.

At this time, the Pasco County School District said it only reviews bus video when there is a complaint and, if there is evidence of abuse, it's immediately reported to the child abuse hotline and Employee Relations.

"Those procedures will not change, and because of those procedures, we were able to quickly determine that Lambert had slapped the child and we immediately contacted law enforcement," said spokesperson Linda Cobbe.

As far as any sort of lawsuit against the district or Lambert, Baez said his office is in the investigative stage and it's still too early to tell.
