A Pinellas County woman was arrested on a felony animal cruelty charge for allegedly leaving her sick dog to die inside a home for a week, according to an arrest warrant.

"I thought the lady would have more compassion than that," said neighbor Patrick McGuffin.

Deputies arrested Danielle Levine, 50, on Friday, for the incident that allegedly happened back in March.

According to the warrant, Levine told deputies she knew the dog was not in good condition but did not have the money to take care of it. Levine allegedly told investigators she gave the dog two Aleve pills wrapped in bacon and left the dog to die.

Neighbor Patricia McGuffin said she could hear that Rottweiler mix named Sapphire was in pain.

"You could hear her crying in my house from inside that house," she said. "That’s how bad that dog was."

McGuffin's husband said he called authorities once he found out Levine had left the dog home alone.

"The breaking point is when they completely moved out and the dog was still over there," Patrick said.

Pinellas County Animal Services officer Jason Anderson told deputies he found the dog lying on the floor unable to move. The dog could not reach food or water and was lying in urine.

Anderson said when they got the dog back to the shelter there was urine seeping off its coat, which resulted in multiple ulcers and large oozing wounds. It was also discovered the dog was suffering from cancer throughout its entire body and had numerous tumors that were left untreated and oozing.

"I kept telling her just call the Humane Society. They will come out here and they’ll help you," said Patrick McGuffin.

The neighbor said Levine replied, "‘Oh, I don’t have no money. If she dies here at home, I’ll bury her in the backyard.’"

Pinellas Animal Services points out that it only costs $20 to euthanize a dog. Levine's being held in the Pinellas Jail on a $25,000 bond.

“I think she is where she should be right now," said Patrick. "She should be made to pay for this."

"I will always love her," said Patricia about Levine. "But I’m also an animal lover and I cannot stand to see any animal suffer."
