For now, part of the Weeki Wachee Preserve is an empty field but soon the lake area will see a possible beach park.

The county will use to 20 acres for the beach park and another for a nature coast education and tourism center.

"It's such a beautiful opportunity for us to have a great place for the people of Hernando County to come and have recreation but not only that it will be a great eco-tourism for the county," said Hernando county commissioner, Diane Rowden.

Following the governor’s recent approval of $3 million to build the center, the county will now come up with another $3 million for the beach park.

"It obviously opens up a golden opportunity for people to enjoy fresh water and a lot more parking spaces," said Hernando County Recreation Coordinator, Harry Johnson.

On Friday, several county officials as well some residents toured parts of the preserve where the project will be built.

"As a resident it provides a place for us to bring our kids so they can swim," said Hernando County resident, Forrest Bennett.

But not everyone is on board with the project. Some residents believe it will disturb wildlife.

"I absolutely don't agree with what you're doing," said Hernando County resident, Mary Smith.

The project is still going through approval process and before anything is built, several public meeting will be held to hear from residents on both sides.
